Great news: Ottawa is hiring more ocean experts to replace those lost (fired, quit, retired) during the Harper “war on science.”
Perhaps now I can be replaced as Canadian co-chair of the Gulf of Maine Council’s Gulfwatch mussel contaminants monitoring program. I retired from Environment Canada Atlantic Region 10 years ago.
Gulfwatch has had no recent Canadian financial or personnel support from the responsible departments (Fisheries and Oceans, Environment and Climate Change and Nova Scotia’s Fisheries and Aquaculture). This is despite the fact that knowledge of levels of toxic chemicals in Maritime molluscan shellfish is critical for the protection of ecosystem health and underpins the viability of our shellfish exports. Hopefully some of the new government ocean investment will keep Gulfwatch going and our shellfish safe, led by a new, younger marine scientist! So, please, replace me, to exercise other “mussels”!
